The Worlds Outside and Within

The outer world can’t be won without lies

And deception is important to survive

But the inner world needs naked truth

So be careful if that’s where you dive.

There are gifts galore in both these worlds

But they each have their rules of play

If you use the rules of the outer world inside

Darkness will envelop you in every way

If you play outside with the rules of inside

Be prepared to be hungry and crushed

So choose with care where you wish to go

And try not to be careless or rushed.

The problem, if I may say that, is one of choice

For the choice itself decides what you will be

But while we flirt a little with both

Things become rather difficult to see.

The world outside cannot stand lies

So the deception mustn’t be easily caught

Or all the effort that you may have put

Will soon come to less than nought.

The world inside can’t stand lies either

Nor does it have patience with deception at all

And that’s the reason we often find

How those that once rose suffer a big fall

There is one way to do well in both

But that way is narrow and hard

And those who can find that way

Hold life’s most vital and important card.
