The Thirsty Universe

Why is our universe so thirsty Why can’t its thirst be slaked The earth tries to soak all the water in places When the sun is strong and the soil is baked Even the air is thirsty and its throat is parched, It drinks up water from all around But it cannot seem to reach those lakes Where water is stored like treasure underground The earth and air both are thirsty But fire’s thirst is of a different kind For fire does not care much for a drink Yet it consumes things it can find It does not care to consume the earth so much But it loves to ingest what the air can bring And when it gets all excited and raging It dances a macabre dance and it sings Water’s thirst is of a different type As it seems to look for places to hide And so it dances merrily down a mountain slope And seems to live it’s heady ride But when the heat of fire gets to it Water begins to rise and go very high Though its shorn of all it has Undressed, naked, uncaring, not shy Other than its thirst for water, the earth Seems content with whatever’s it’s lot But it’s happy to soak in some fire’s heat And saves it gladly as it gets hot It releases its heat into the air Sharing its warmth when it has enough It seems not to care how things have been Nor about a situation that sometimes seems tough Space plays by rules unlike the others’ rules And seems to love watching what’s going on Little can bother its calm state of being, Never excited, tired, bored or worn And all these things are a part of you and me As you and I are part of them, too Perhaps, the thirst that we feel at times Are merely an expression of what the elements do. - rajyogi (Rajesh Kanoi)
