The state one is in - both inner and outer, the place, the situation, the job, the relationships and every aspect of life is the sum total of choices made earlier by oneself and also his forebears and others who influence in some way.

Assuming we have little to no control over others’ actions, we need to take complete responsibility of at least our own.

If we find ourselves in an unpleasant situation today in any way, we need to acknowledge that we are where we are because of what we chose yesterday. And what we choose today will decide where we will be in the days to come. But, more importantly, if we learn to exercise the power of choice and decide to be in a certain way, a way that’s more to our liking now, at this very moment, it will pave the way for us to keep paving our way in the days ahead.

When we learn to pave our way little can stop us from living a life that’s far more to our liking. Our path will smoother and the scenery we see along the way, a lot more beautiful.

If, for example, at this very moment as you read this short passage, you decide to wear a smile on your face and keep wearing it as long as you are aware that smiling too is a choice, you will have taken the first step to paving your way to a happier, smoother life.

Earlier, we had enumerated a few choices and presented them as binaries but that was not an exhaustive list. Accept or reject is another important binary. In life, not all situations are to our liking or just the way we want them.

We usually choose to reject them in some way, at some level. But, that which we reject, we cannot touch. It’s only when we accept that there is a certain way that things are, we can start influencing them in some way. But, far more importantly, through acceptance, we set ourselves up in a way that we don’t become our own roadblocks.

It’s by exercising our power to choose that we create possibilities of certain experiences. And, isn’t that what life is all about - experiences?
