The Flame

You show others’ shadows, flame
But you have no shadow of your own
As you flicker about in the wind
The shadows too dance, you’re not alone.
Why are you attached to shadows, flame
You give them life when they had none
And if by chance you leave to go
They too are immediately gone.
What do wish to tell us, flame
What is it you wish to show
For when you rise and grow in size
The shadows don’t seem to grow
Why are you so playful, flame
Why do you dance when the wind blows
And sometimes when it blows hard
You lose your moves and the glow.
Your presence warms in many ways
Yet you can finish that which you warm
It’s as though you’re usually gentle really
But sometimes your heart’s a raging storm.
