The Breath and its Sojourn

I say I breathe
And you say you breathe
But breath is something that happens
Inspite of us...
Breath passes in and out of us
But all we can do is breathe in a certain way
Like a boatman who directs his boat
But cannot keep it afloat.
But a boatman can help the boat stay afloat
By bailing out water that enters the boat
Still he cannot float his boat.
And so, you and I
Can’t breathe
But we can allow breath happen to us
In a certain way...
As long as we keep our attention there.
Then where’s the difference?
Between you and I?
That which passes through me as breath
Passes through you, too...
You and I may witness the breath
If we like
But we can never really breathe...
And then one day the breath may tire of us
And depart like a guest who must leave...
Will he carry a pleasant memory
Of how we treated him
Or will he leave happy to go
For we paid him no attention
Nor looked after him well...
Can you stop and ask your breath?
