The Anatomy of Depression

When depression strikes
Who is it that’s depressed?
Is it the sun-source of self
Whose presence within gives life?
Or is it the shadow-self, the ego,
The one who believes he is the be-all?
The ego may melt or die away
But life continues within
But when the sun-source leaves
The heart-beat quietly stops.
Is it the sun-source or the ego
That is depressed?
The sun-source is a benign presence
And it watches what happens to one
Like a gentle guardian, it shows the way
But like an imbecile the ego ignores it
And walks the path where doom awaits.
The doom that awaits is pain and trouble
And a lack of wisdom to deal with challenges
And, unable to face what it’s created itself
The ego and its slave the mind are stuck
Depression is their cry for help
On their own terms
But does help ever come on terms that led to trouble in the first place?
The one who can help is the sun-source
But the ego stays blind to its presence...
And depression grows.
Depression is the ego’s last cry for help
As its tantrums work no more.
Often, the ego is ready to die
And its death results in a new life...
A new dawn, a new resolve, a new beginning...
