Power of Choices IV

There are a million things happening every moment wherever we are - movement, sounds, sights, thoughts, emotions, drama, life...and death. The very earth on which we stand is moving...rotating and hurtling through space around the moving sun.
And what do we choose to notice or pay attention to?
Most of the time we choose nothing. The mind chooses what to pay attention to...and it’s mostly itself. The mind is engrossed in its own thoughts, churning them out endlessly, one after another and that’s where we’re stuck. We choose not to watch our own minds because we don’t even know that we actually have a choice...in fact, we have endless choices. But we identify ourselves with our minds and so whatever the mind chooses becomes our choice.
We forget that we have a mind but we are not the mind. Then why must we believe ourselves to be just our minds? Why must we be so entrapped by the mind and its games that it plays us like we are its toys, its prisoners, its slaves?
We were and are unaware of a tremendous thing called CHOICE. And, what do we do? We give up control of this amazing gift to that which controls us - the mind.
And, how does the mind use the power to choose? Does it use it to benefit us?
Well, it could but even a cursory appraisal of people and their actions around us tells us that our minds - something that belongs to us - is actually not in our control and, perhaps, never was. Unfortunately, for many people it never will be either. Often, the mind uses our power to choose against us. It uses it not to benefit us but to weaken us.
Most people are so enmeshed, trapped, deluded by their minds that they will not stop to take a look at it. The mind is like a forbidden den, which if entered will lead to immense trouble.
And, so the mind continues...slowly disempowering us, tugging at us to run after one thing or another, leaving us always seeking but never finding joy, peace, happiness, love etc. If, by chance, we do find some joy or peace, it quickly steps in and draws us away from those rare beautiful moments...into a world of pain somewhere...
The mind story can go on and on. It is, after all, the most powerful thing a human being possesses. And this immensely powerful thing has but one lever, one rein, one thing with which to control it.
It’s Choices. But choices have power over the mind only when we snatch the reins from the mind and hold it firmly in our own hands...that’s the inner us and the one that has a muscle called Will...will power.
