Power of Choices II

We make choices all the time. That’s not a power that’s exercised only in some very special or critical moments or stages in life.

Choices may be related to events outside us and making considered choices based on our goals, aims or path can be very important but more important than what happens outside is what happens inside of us.

‘What happens outside is mere drama...life happens on the inside’ and it’s the inner choices that you would like to dwell upon.

Some facets of this diamond are being shined upon for you to see their beauty and to help you think deeper:

1. Happiness/blissed outness/joyfulness or tensed/worried/sad/depressed etc. Basically, the idea is to choose between these binaries...whether to be happy or sad, angry or calm, joyful or depressed and so on. If you decide to choose to be happy even when an external situation pushes you in the opposite direction, you will have scored a major spiritual victory.

Having succeeded once or twice, what’s to stop you from replicating this over and over again until it becomes a habit? And when it does you’re well on your way to your own buddhahood. Surely, you have seen those pictures or statuettes of a big-bellied, happy Buddha whose cup is filled with all that he chooses to fill them with.

2. Good/bad/terrible: Almost at any moment or situation we can choose to be any of these. Being ‘good’ may or may not be the most important thing to you but sometimes when you are good where you were expected to be ‘bad’ or would have been bad, you score a massive point. It will help you rise in your own eyes...the most important place to rise, in many ways.

3. Gratifying the body or gratifying the spirit/soul: We do things that we consider important for our physical/material well-being but they are sometimes at odds with our deeper reality. If we can choose to forsake material gain, physical pleasure or something similar because we sense within that it’s not in our best interest in the longest term, we will have yet again scored a massive personal victory.

It’s these little choices and victories that define the real us...the ‘us’ that’s inside but covered by tons of rubble. As this gem is uncovered and brought closer to the surface, we begin to glow with an inner light and what can be a greater achievement in life than to achieve this state!
