What do you believe? Did you choose it?
Have you thought where those beliefs came from? How they affect you? Do they make your life richer or poorer?
I’m not talking about religion. Each religion has something to offer but to be able to receive what it does one needs a certain amount of preparation, reflection, consideration...
Other than religious beliefs there are a million other beliefs...small and big. They shape us, our personalities, our characters and a lot more. They even have the power to affect our choices.
That’s what needs to be overturned. We need to choose our beliefs ourselves.
When beliefs are passed through a sieve of analytical thought, we begin to see them for what they are, how they affect us and the role they will play in shaping our lives.
If beliefs are founded on certain experiences that have been understood and internalized consciously, they may yet play a constructive role in our lives.
Beliefs are a short-cut, a formula of sorts that are used to help navigate through what can be hard to process and understand sometimes when there is a lot of information to consider. And, in these days of an information overload, it’s especially tricky to sort through it all. That’s where beliefs may do for us what formulae do for mathematicians.
Rather than be caught on the wrong foot because of beliefs especially in critical situations or moments, if the beliefs are those that we chose based on certain considerations, life experiences and so on, they can give us a solid foundation to base ourselves, to stand on and from where to direct our lives.
Every once in a while, we need to check our beliefs and see how they are doing and what they are doing for us. And, we need to do this by looking at them through the prism of our own lives and what we have learnt.
Beliefs need to be chosen and chosen well. That’s when beliefs can become like neon signs on a dark road which is what life can be sometimes...
