My Unseen Driver

That which gives me my breath

And that which makes my heart beat

Does a million more other things

And is the one sitting in the driver’s seat.

And, he drives my car beautifully well

As he drives trillions of others, too

But I sit in the back seat of my car

And try to tell him what to do.

I direct the driver’s actions as though

I’m the one that’s doing it all,

But the Driver sits quiet doing his thing

Though he’s forced to respond to my call.

The breakdowns and crashes usually happen

When the Driver acts on my desire -

Sometimes the engine sputters and stops

And sometimes I get a flat tire.

It’s only when I sit back and relax

And let my Driver steer me through the lanes

That each journey becomes more rewarding

And I’m spared all unnecessary pains.
