How Can I Be Myself

How can I be myself?

When almost no one accepts me as I am

And desires me to be the way they want?

How can I be myself?

When I don’t fit into the grooves

That people have for how one should be?

How can I be myself?

When one by one they all drift away

And leave me like an uninhabited island?

How can I be myself?

When all alone I find myself

But others all choose to lose me?

And, then, when I begin to find myself

How can I not be myself?

When I begin to discover the fountain of joy

Flowing ceaselessly, silently inside

How can I not be myself?

Undistracted, undisturbed I begin to probe within

And find gems unlike I’ve found elsewhere

How can I not be myself?

What does it matter that no one’s with me

That all have gone one by one

When I have begun to be myself?

Who knows when the tap of life runs dry

But the stream of peace flows gently within

Won’t I be glad I became myself?

To have lived an authentic life

And found the blessing to be myself

I’ll know I was fortunate to have been deserted

For an oasis began to take shape

And the palm fronds dance in the breeze.
