Good Times

We do not recognize good times

When good times are truly there

It’s only when they’ve passed

That we start becoming aware.

When the good times are on

Our focus is on what’s not in place

And so the good times slip by

As though they’re in some race.

And then times begin to change

And something new takes their place

That’s when we begin to miss

What’s disappeared without a trace.

There are few among us all

Who cherish what they have in hand

As life slips quickly past

Leaving them where they stand.

Memories of the past

Don’t return whatever has gone

While misty hopes of a future to come

Leave us powerless like a chess-piece pawn.

The present moment bears many gifts

And that’s what good times are

Though something or other is always amiss

And draws our attention like a faraway star

When we put our attention to the now

We can enjoy the good times well

But when we run after the future or past

We transform our good times into hell.
