Breath - The Never-assessed Wealth

Mastery over a thing can only come
When its subtleties are seen over time
And once that milestone is truly crossed,
We begin to understand its meter and rhyme.
We read a few books and listen to those
Who have some mastery in their field
And then get hold of certificates and things
And think we’ve learnt how an onion is peeled.
How an onion can be peeled
Can be learnt by doing it again and again,
Not through books or certificates
But by ingesting lessons gleaned through pain.
Unless we pay our attention to a thing
Its mysteries cannot be unveiled -
We’ve seen many students with open books
Who took their exams and woefully failed.
We breathe thousands of times each day
But our attention’s never on it
And so the secrets that our breath wants to share
Lie undiscovered in a place not lit.
Of all that we run and chase after in life
There’s little more valuable than the breath
But though we breathe from right under our noses
Its immense gifts remain secret until death.
And once we’re dead its secrets won’t help
For we can then breathe no more;
Life’s greatest gift will remain under wraps,
Its great wealth untouched though in an open store.
