Breath, Consciousness and Mind

Breath is a very mysterious thing
That we usually understand in a superficial way
As a carrier of oxygen which we need
And without we can’t live a single day.
But I think breath is actually much more
For consciousness departs when it is gone
So consciousness may really be breath itself
Which powers us from the day we’re born.
Breathing is not just a mechanical act
But a process that’s constantly on
As long as life continues inside
Breathing too must continue on.
But life and consciousness may not be one
For we’ve heard of comatose states
Where breathing does not stop
Where the heart beats and blood circulates.
When life and breath both are present
Where is it that consciousness goes -
Perhaps it goes where unfinished business remains
For the mind and body seem comatose.
Consciousness and mind are closely connected
And in some ways they, too, are one
But in a comatose person the mind is elsewhere
Like daylight at times when there is no sun.
So, mind is like a vehicle that travels
And can go to all kinds of places and states
And, perhaps, in some ways it goes
Wherever the breath-consciousness dictates.
