An Unequal Exchange

Will you take in exchange

A bit of my nothingness

For some of your somethingness?

Will you be able to use

That nothingness to dissolve

Some of your somethingness?

Or do you think my nothingness

Is worth less than nothing

And surely, less than your somethingness?

But you are a wise trader

Who will never give in exchange

Some of something for a bit of nothing.

But I sit in the marketplace and display my wares

That passersby look at in disdain

And judge me vain.

And at the end of the day I wrap up

My non-exchanged stocks of nothingness

And sling them across my shoulders

For display yet another day...

I am a trader too like you

And I too have something to give

But there are few who can value

My wares of nothingness...

So I leave them on the pavement sometimes

That some may find them of use

And I go back home to my maker empty-handed

And he gives me some more wares,

A replenished stock of nothingness

For display in the marketplace...
