A Prayer

If life has a purpose, let me fulfill it, God,

And if it doesn’t, let me give it one;

If life cannot bring me warmth and joy

Teach me to be a little like the sun.

If life is unable to quench my thirst,

Teach me to be like the Amrit that flows

Down hills and mountains, across the plains

Slaking parched mouths wherever it goes.

If life cannot satisfy my hunger for food

Teach me to be the like the golden grain

That is harvested and threshed and ground

That I may have lived but not in vain.
